Walkabout with Vivian Lee in Culver City
Vivian is an actress and model in Los Angeles, and she’s starting a journey in photography as well. When I started out in photography, I would frequently do photo sessions with friends out in the wild— or at least, around the city. I’m a firm believer that an observant eye can find interesting light or scenes in almost any environment, and I learned this by making use of impromptu scenes with whatever sort of light is available. We decided a walk around my old stomping grounds in Culver City would be a fun experience to shoot together and give her an opportunity to take pictures around an art deco former factory.
The specific location is the Helms Olympic Bakery building, an art deco styled factory building from when the Olympics were held in Los Angeles— the first time, in 1932. Back then, Helms Bakery pioneered the concept of “official corporate sponsor,” and in a stroke of branding genius, delivered bread to all the olympic athletes.
The building has gone through several changes in the 90 years since then, housing an olympic fencing academy, art studios, restaurants, and furniture stores. Rumor on the street is thas a bakery may soon return to one corner of the building.
It was a quiet day, the bright sun and clear air gave us strong, contrasty light with crisp, deep shadows. I lent Vivian a newly-acquired vintage camera, a 1970’s Yashica Electro CC rangefinder (thanks Derrick!), and she had fun taking it for a spin.
Thanks for reading, and joining us in spirit on this walkabout.
